Newsagent fights off gun-wielding robber by hitting him with computer monitor

This is the moment a brave newsagent fought off a gun-wielding robber by hitting him with a computer monitor as he made moves towards the till.

Daniel Lee - who has since been jailed - entered a newsagent on Shawbrooke Road in Eltham, London, on Sunday, December 10, and began demanding money from the man inside the store.

Security footage from inside the shop caught the 43-year-old pointing his gun at the victim and beating him with it several times, causing minor injuries.

The brave shop attendant can be seen striking Lee with a computer monitor from the till as he attempts to usher him towards the store exit.

Lee was dressed distinctively in a black hoodie, balaclava, one black glove, one yellow glove, and a pair of black trainers with an orange-red band at the back.

Police say he managed to steal an iPhone from the counter, a Samsung phone from inside the victim's jacket and the cash drawer before leaving on a bicycle.

He was later seen on a footpath close to the newsagent attempting to break open the cash drawer using the butt of his gun, the Metropolitan Police say.

He is said to have discarded his gloves on the footpath, which were later discovered by police who found they contained DNA from Lee and the victim.

Police later discovered he had worn the same clothing during a previous interaction with officers.

Lee was arrested in Eltham on December 28.

He has now been jailed for six years and four months after pleading guilty to robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to commit a schedule one offence at Woolwich Crown Court.

The victim and another passer-by who sought to intervene were given Sheriff's Awards for Bravery.

Detective Constable Seán Keogh of the Met Police’s Flying Squad said: "Criminality of this kind spreads terror through communities and can cause long lasting harm and trauma, all for very little personal benefit.

"I hope this sentence reassures the community that the police will identify and remove these offenders from law abiding society; as well as demonstrating to those who would consider similar actions that they have little to gain, but a lot to lose."
