Air Canada says it’s now charging passengers $30 each to book flights by phone.
The non-refundable booking fee, plus tax, has been charged since Oct. 15 for new bookings made by phone with an Air Canada agent at its Contact Centre, according to Air Canada’s website.
The fee is charged per passenger, not per booking. The fee for booking a flight for two passengers is $60 and booking a flight for three passengers is $90. The fee is not refundable if the booking is cancelled.
The fee does not apply to bookings made through the carrier’s website or app. Air Canada says the policy allows contact centre agents to focus on cases that require personalized support, while encouraging online bookings to reduce wait times.
Air Canada says customers with accessibility requirements are exempt from the fee. They can call its accessibility services team by phone or visit its accessibility services page for assistance.
The booking fee also does not apply when customers call about travel disruptions, including delays and cancellations.
The booking fee will appear as a separate line item on Air Canada receipts.
Phone fees are common among airlines, though specific policies vary. United Airlines charges US$25 (CA$35), while Alaska Airlines charges US$30 (CA$42) per person.
