World's happiest countries revealed as the US drops out of the top 20 for the first time

The world's happiest and unhappiest countries have been ranked in the most recent World Happiness Report.

The happiest countries in the world have been revaled for 2024, according to the most up-to-date UN-backed World Happiness Report.

The report, which is in its twelth year, shows the US has dropped out of the top 20 for the first time.

At the top of the list is Finland, which has been voted the happiest country for seven years running.

But the UK and the US have become less happy, the worldwide study of 140 countries shows.

Afghanistan is at the bottom of the World Happiness Report once again. It is based on data provided by people in each country who are asked to rate their lives out of 10.

The UK fell one spot to 20th, putting it below countries like Lithuania and Czechia, while the US dropped eight spots to 23rd.

Experts also said the data shows a worrying trend of younger adults in Europe and North America feeling like they're having a "mid-life crisis".

The report gives a happiness score from zero to 10, based on an average score over three years.

Finland got a score of 7.74 out of 10, while Afghanistan got 1.72. The UK's score was 6.72 for comparison.

The US's score was slightly lower, causing it to drop out of the top 20 since the report started in 2012.

Analysts said this was mainly because wellbeing among under-30s has gone down, with this year's report being the first to show results by age group.

The US came 62nd in terms of happiness among young people. Among older people - defined as those over 60 - it came 10th.

Britain was 32nd for young people's happiness, 27th for younger middle-aged people, 19th for older middle-aged people, and 20th for older people.

Lithuania, which is 19th overall, has the happiest young people in the world, while Denmark, which is 2nd overall, has the happiest old people on Earth.
