Households across the UK are being urged to gather essential supplies this weekend. It comes as snow is expected to bring widespread disruption, with forecasters warning of potential travel disruption, power cuts and loss of mobile phone coverage.

The Met Office has issued a number of yellow snow and ice warnings for the UK, including across the East Midlands, northern England and Scotland until 3pm on Saturday (January 10). A separate warning is also in place from 2am until 3pm on Sunday, covering Scotland, the West Midlands and northern England. Weather maps show that a total of 42 counties could be hit by snow before Monday.

British Gas is urging people to be prepared for heavy snowfall this weekend. They say households should gather essential supplies, including an "emergency kit".

British Gas says: "It’s a good habit to have at least three days’ worth of food and essentials stored in an easy-to-reach part of your home.

"That’s things like medicines, drinking water, non-perishable food and snacks, and extra blankets. You should also keep a torch, batteries and a phone charger close by too."

According to the Met Office, snow will bring disruption to a number of areas on Sunday (January 11). The forecaster is warning of travel delays, including traffic congestion and cancelled public services, as well as potential power cuts.

The forecaster states: "Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous, so to keep yourself and others safe: plan your route, checking for delays and road closures, amending your travel plans if necessary; if driving, leave more time to prepare and check your car before setting off; make sure you have essentials packed in your car in the event of any delays (warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger).

"People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items."

Weather maps show a band of snow sweeping across the nation, stretching from Stoke-on-Trent, in Staffordshire, up to the north of Scotland. The heaviest flurries are expected in Scotland, with up to 40mm of snow set to fall per hour.

Meanwhile, parts of England, including Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle. are also braced for snow at 6am on Sunday. Areas of the region could see up to 20mm of snow fall every hour at this time.
