On Friday evening Princess Kate put out a video message on social media explaining that she had been diagnosed with cancer following her abdominal surgery in January.

Kate said that while her condition was not initially believed to be cancerous, further tests had detected the disease and she was advised to undertake a course of preventative chemotherapy.

Last summer the Duchess of York underwent a mastectomy after breast cancer was detected during a regular check-up, then just months later it was discovered she had malignant melanoma.
