Romantasy fans rejoice as Sarah J. Maas reveals 2 new books in wildly popular series

Thank the cauldron — it's finally happening.

After five long years of waiting, bestselling author Sarah J. Maas has announced the release dates for not one but two new books in her wildly popular romantasy series A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR).

In an interview on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast on Wednesday, Maas revealed that the follow-up to 2021's A Court of Silver Flames is coming on Oct. 27, and a seventh book will be released on Jan. 12, 2027.

"The story that was finally ready to come out of me was big — really, really big," Maas said in the podcast.

"And as I started writing, this ... like energy vortex, it came out of me in a way that surprised me." 

The fantasy romance story that follows three sisters in a beautiful but dangerous Fae world will essentially be told in four parts across three books, she explained: ACOTAR 6, ACOTAR 7 and a third, unnamed book.

"It's meant to be read ideally as one massive, massive story as opposed to, like, in a trilogy," Maas said.

Maas, who is also the author of the best-selling Crescent City and Throne of Glass series, has sold more than 75 million books worldwide published in 40 languages. She is often credited with launching the romantasy genre's popularity that saw BookTok explode during the pandemic.

Publisher's shares jump

Maas's publisher, Bloomsbury, announced its shares surged as much as 20 per cent on Thursday following her announcement, according to Reuters.

“Fans all over the world are eagerly anticipating reading the next books in the ACOTAR series and we are very excited about this news. Publishing two novels within 11 weeks of each other from a bestselling author is almost unprecedented in publishing history," Nigel Newton, chief executive of Bloomsbury, said in a news release.

The books in the five-part series were originally published between 2015 and 2021, but sales surged in more recent years thanks to superfans on TikTok. In 2023, Bloomsbury announced Maas was contracted to write three more books in the series.

"We finally have news!" announced a moderator in an ALL-CAPS pinned post on the Sarah J. Maas subreddit Wednesday night.

"I’ve never been so f---ing happy in my life," someone else commented, along with 18 cry-face emojis.

"What a goddamn TREAT for an author to release 2 books within 3 months. This never happens!! (George take note)," someone else commented, a dig at Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, who has been writing the next installment in his series for more than a decade.
