Prince William is said to have asked when it will all stop after weeks of frenzied online rumours about Princess Kate pushed by trolls.

The Princess of Wales's absence from public view has unleashed a mounting frenzy of wild speculation, scepticism and bizarre conspiracy theories fuelled by armchair detectives on social media.

William is said to be "angry", "frustrated" and "deeply disappointed" at the whole saga, according to the Daily Mail's royal correspondent Rebecca English.

She said in an article for the same publication: "'When will it all stop?' He (William) is said to have asked."

Ms English added William has "worked hard" to protect his family from the "worst excesses" of being in the public eye, learning to work with the established British media and being afforded "unprecedented privacy".

But the first in line to the throne has learnt the hard way that the degree of control he has experienced with the media in the UK doesn't extend to the "sump of social media", according to Ms English.

Rumours flew this week despite Kate and William reportedly being filmed at a farm shop near their Windsor home.

It was the first footage of Kate, 42, since she had planned abdominal surgery for an unspecified condition at The London Clinic two months ago.

The Waleses' visit to Windsor Farm Shop sparked rumours Kate had used a body double, rejected by a woman who has impersonated the princess for years.

There were also wild claims that reports of staff at The London Clinic trying to access her medical records were leaked to divert attention from the Windsor Farm Shop video. Three members of the private hospital's staff are reported to be under investigation.

Ms English cited royal insiders who fear William will become "even more insular" due to Kate's experience.

The royal expert said that William and his team aren't "minded" to react in public to "the madness" surrounding Princess Kate.

She added the Palace has not "entirely ruled out" making some kind of public statement ahead of Kate's return to royal duties.

Ms English wrote: "It has been tough for him (William) to stand by and see his wife’s reputation shredded by the court of public opinion in the way his late mother’s once was.

"How he handles the situation moving forwards will surely be a mark of the King he is one day to become."
