Poundland, M&S, New Look and River Island closing stores in September - full list

British high streets are facing yet more shop closures before the end of the year, with dozens of stores set to shut their doors in September. Shoppers may enjoy the closing-down sales in the short term, but the move is set to be another blow to local communities.

From Poundland to New Look to M&S, retailers are pulling down shutters across the land. Up to 17,000 stores are expected to close this year alone, according to the Centre for Retail Research.

Poundland

Discount chain Poundland has been closing down across the UK. Three stores are set to shut next month.

September 3:

Marks & Spencer

Meanwhile Marks & Spencer is shutting its flagship site in Wolverhampton in September. The Dudley Street outlet first opened in 1929, however will serve customers for the last time on September 27.

New Look

The budget fashion brand is shutting its Scarborough store on September 5. A spokesperson thanked all their colleagues and local community for "their support over the years".

New Look has warned that almost 100 of its 364 stores could be at risk, having already closed 11 sites this year, including in Birmingham.

River Island

River Island is closing shops as part of a massive restructuring plan. A huge 33 stores will close across the UK, with most coming in January 2026. A number of its shops have already closed this year, with its Edinburgh site going this year. The store will stop serving customers on September 5.
