They’re known "the lighter way to enjoy chocolate" but the meaning of the name has been weighing people down.

Maltesers are divine little chocolate spheres filled with mouthwatering honeycomb that are popular around the world.

In fact they’re loved by so many Brits that the snack - which are made by Mars - are currently riding high as the most popular brand in the UK according to a poll on YouGov.

But what does its name actually mean?

Of course many presumed it was to do with the fact that they include barley malt as a main ingredient and an open bag can tease you into submission of scoffing the lot. And they’d be correct!

For others, however, confusion has reigned due to the way that the brand name is spelled - missing and ‘a’ from tease - with many thinking it was to do with the country Malta and its people - the Maltese.

Chris Christensen picked up on the common misconception on his travel blog which detailed facts about Malta.

He wrote: “Originally, they were referred to as Energy Balls, an invention of Forrest Mars back in 1936. They derive their name from two words ‘malt’ and ‘teasers’.

“Regardless of the spelling, Maltesers have no connection with the Maltese people or the Malta city. Maltesers remain popular with people of all generations who value their great taste.”

Candy Bar Sydney - an Australian chocolate and sweet shop - also picked up on the error that chocolate lovers have been making.

They wrote: “Here’s another fun fact about Maltesers – the name is a clever combination of the words ‘malt’ and ‘teasers’ but has absolutely nothing to do with Malta or the Maltese population.

“But yes, Maltesers do get distributed there, so residents of Malta get to enjoy wholesale quantities of Maltesers just as much as we do here in the lucky country.”

Maltesers were created by the American Forrest Mars Sr. in the United Kingdom in 1936 and first sold in 1937.

Hilariously they were originally described as "energy balls" and aimed at slimming women.

Earlier slogans have included "The chocolates with the less fattening centre", "No ordinary chocolate" and "Nothing pleases like Maltesers".

Regardless of the slogan though, we absolutely love them and they will forever be the go-to-snack on movie night - or any other time of the day for that matter.
