WASHINGTON: A gunman in the US state of Minnesota shot two Democratic state lawmakers Saturday (Jun 14), killing one and her husband and wounding the other in what officials said were targeted attacks.

Governor Tim Walz said the attack at the lawmakers' homes in two towns near Minneapolis "appears to be a politically motivated assassination".

The fatally shot lawmaker was identified as Melissa Hortman.

The suspect, dressed as a police officer, escaped after exchanging gunfire with the police.

A manifesto identifying many lawmakers and officials was also found inside the suspect's vehicle, said the police chief for Brooklyn Park.
