Met Office names 38 UK areas facing snow before Sunday – full list

Weather warnings remain in place until Monday, with large parts of the UK still set to face snow and ice.

Weather warnings have been active across the UK all week as Storm Goretti continues to bring snow, ice, and high winds. Storm Goretti, named by Meteo-France, is the first major storm of the year in the UK – causing travel disruption and for hundreds of schools to close. Winds reached up to 99mph on Thursday, bringing down trees and cutting power to around 60,000 homes.

Birmingham Airport and East Midlands Airport suspended all runway operations on Thursday due to heavy snow. A red warning for dangerous winds was also issued by the Met Office for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and amber snow warnings were in effect for the Midlands, Yorkshire, and parts of Wales. On Friday, January 9, several regions are also expected see snow, including London and the South East, East of England, North East and North West England, South West England, the West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber, and large parts of Wales.

In addition, snow and ice warnings are in place for Scotland, parts of Northern England, and Northern Ireland. Warnings remain in place into Saturday for Scotland and Northern Ireland as well as the East Midlands, North East England, North West England and Yorkshire & Humber.

The Met Office urges residents to take care, allow extra time for journeys, and stay updated on local conditions as the cold and hazardous weather continues.

The Met Office forecast for today reads: "Storm Goretti will slowly edge away, but rain and some snow continuing across the east of England. Elsewhere, a mixture of clear and sunny spells with a scattering of wintry showers in places. Windy and feeling cold.

Tonight, rain and sleet will slowly clear from eastern England, while wintry showers continue elsewhere, mostly along coastal areas. It will be another cold night with widespread frost and ice, though winds will ease further east.

The weather forecast for Saturday also reads: "Some wintry showers for parts of eastern England and Scotland. Dry with variable cloud elsewhere with frost inland unlikely to clear during the day. Much lighter winds than of late."
