Parts of the UK are bracing for unsettled conditions as heavy rainfall looks likely to batter several areas of the country on Tuesday, August 4. The Met Office's weather maps suggest 32 areas in the UK face rain across the day, while some other parts of the country face prolonged drought conditions.

According to the weather charts generated on August 2, the downpours will begin to hit the UK early on Tuesday, with Scotland witnessing the heaviest rainfall. The maps show that almost the whole of Scotland will be lashed by the rainy weather. Every county in Northern Ireland will also be hit by rain during the day, the maps suggest. The downpours will also hit the Midlands and some parts of Wales, the maps have suggested.

While Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern and central England are set to experience rain in the morning, weather maps for Tuesday evening show the rainy conditions dissipating for most.

The Met Office’s forecast for Tuesday to Thursday reads: “Unsettled at first, with spells of rain and some heavy showers, especially in northern areas. Conditions gradually improve later, becoming drier for many. Hot in the southeast, cooler further north.”

This comes as the forecaster described July as being characterised by an “exceptional combination of extreme heat, abundant sunshine and an almost complete absence of rainfall”.

Provisional statistics showed that only 5.6mm of rainfall had been recorded in England in July – less than half of the previous record of 13.4mm set in 1911.

Half of England and the whole of Wales is officially in drought, as successive heatwaves put pressure on water resources.
