Major update on new Lidl stores as plans submitted – full list

Lidl is among the supermarkets planning new stores in the UK over the next couple of years. Several sites have received major updates.

Two major updates have been issued as Lidl rolls on with its plans to expand across the UK by opening new stores. The German supermarket, which already has more than 1,000 stores in the UK, recently announced that it has earmarked 40 sites for new Lidl stores. It has confirmed 19 new stores for 2026, and locals are getting excited about having another budget supermarket. Some major updates have emerged in the last few days, including the construction of a new store and the submission of plans.

Plans to build a new Lidl store in Cardigan, Wales, have been submitted to Ceredigion County Council after a consultation had taken place. The supermarket is hoping to build a supermarket where a B&M store currently stands on Aberystwyth Road. A statement revealed that the planned new store would employ 40 people, creating local jobs. The store plans feature a 1,976 sqm store with 100 car parking spaces, including seven parent and child and six accessible parking bays. The building would be set further back than the B&M store, according to the submission.

Planning documents state: "Lidl always seek to source labour locally and provide management opportunities for staff, the company’s philosophy being to provide all its employees with opportunities for developing and progressing their careers with the company, with the longstanding corporate strategy being to promote from within the business."

Meanwhile, construction has begun on a Lidl store in Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire. The store, which will be located on Cranford Road, is slated to open in early 2027.

Construction began this month on the site next to Season’s Garden Centre after initial groundwork was carried out in January. "We’ve seen demand for our products continue to rise across the country and are incredibly excited to deliver our unique offering to Burton Latimer," said Andrew Hodgkinson, regional head of property at Lidl GB.

Lidl has ambitious expansion plans, something which is likely to be welcomed by shoppers as the chain was named the second-cheapest supermarket in the country, falling only slightly behind its main rival, Aldi.

Lidl recently confirmed that it continues to explore plans to bring stores to Llandudno, Abergele and Rhyl in North Wales. A spokesperson told the Pioneer and the Journal: "We continue to have active site requirements in Abergele, Llandudno and Rhyl to help meet the rising demand we're continuing to see across Wales."

This comes after it opened new stores in Caldy Valley Road in Chester, Oxford Road in Calne, Yaxham Road in Dereham, Purbrook Way in Havant and Stamford Hill in London in February.
