A major motorway has been shut after a man was hit by a lorry and died. The M57 will be closed "for the foreseeable" following the tragic crash in the early hours of this morning.

North West Motorway Police said they rushed to the scene, between J2 for Liverpool Road in Prescot and J3 for Seth Powell Way in Stockbridge Village at around 4am on Saturday, April 20.

The driver of the HGV stopped at the scene and assisted police with their enquiries, Liverpool Echo reports.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the area and find an alternative route.
