M5 traffic LIVE: Major UK motorway shuts after 'serious crash' causes severe delays

There is no estimated re-opening time at present after a "serious crash" on the major stretch of motorway, according to National Highways.

A "serious crash" on the M5 in Somerset has forced a large stretch of the motorway to close, sparking travel chaos accross the region.

An update on the National Highways website reads: "The M5 in Somerset is closed northbound between junction 21 (Weston-Super-Mare) to Junction 19 (Portishead) due to a serious collision.

"Avon and Somerset Police are currently leading the response to this closure. This incident came through to National Highways at approximately 10:30 and at present we have no estimated re-opening time."

It is not yet known whether there have been any injuries as a result of the incident.

Road officials are warning of delays of 20 minutes, with National Highways confirming that Avon and Somerset Police are at the scene.

National Highways issued diversion route

According to the National Highways website, road users are advised to follow the solid triangle on road signs if heading northbound. The diversion route is as follows:

Exit the M5 northbound at J21.

Join the A370 north/east towards Bristol.

Travel north on the A370 through Congresbury, West Town and Long Ashton.

In Bristol and the A370 junction with the A4, join the A4 westbound.

Follow the A4 westbound towards Avonmouth.

At Avonmouth rejoin the M5 at J18.
