Emergency services have raced to the scene on the M4 between Bristol and Tormarton.

A huge crash has brought a section of the M4 near Bristol to a standstill this afternoon, with emergency services at the scene causing huge delays along the route.

An updated on the National Highways website reads: "The M4 in Gloucestershire is closed in both directions between J18 (Tormarton/A46) and J19 (Bristol/M32) following a serious collision.

"All emergency services including Avon & Somerset Police are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management."

The road is expected to remain closed for an extended period of time. It is unknown whether there have been any serious casualties as a result of the crash.

Police update on road closures as drivers urged to avoid area

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police has confirmed that the strethch of the M4 will be shut in both directions between Tormarton and Bristol for the foreseaable.

They wrote on social media site X: "The M4 has been closed in both directions between junctions 18 (Bath) and 19 (Bristol) following a serious collision. Emergency services are at the scene.

"The closure is expected to remain in place for some time. Please avoid the area."
