Liz Truss discusses receiving criticism from Joe Biden

Liz Truss sparked laughter from her US audience this afternoon when taking a swipe at Joe Biden.

The former Prime Minister blasted President Biden, who waded in to comment on her mini budget in a break from conventional diplomatic protocols.

In October 2022, President Biden described the tax-cutting budget as a “mistake”, adding: “I think that the idea of cutting taxes on the super-wealthy…”

“I disagree with the policy, but it’s up to Britain to make that judgment, not me.”

Speaking this afternoon at the US-based Heritage Foundation think tank, Ms Truss tore into President Biden’s tax hypocrisy and won laughter from the audience.

She pointed out: “Joe Biden criticised my police from an ice cream parlour in Oregon!

“He said that cutting the top rate of tax was wrong, even though the top rate of tax in Britain after my proposals was still higher than the top rate of tax in the United States.

The former PM suggested that President Biden’s intervention, alongside those by international bodies like the IMF, shows a resistance both in the UK and abroad to right-wing free-market supply-side policies that would make economies more dynamic.

Ms Truss said she was speaking at the Heritage Foundation to deliver a warning to the US, and to conservatives across the Atlantic, that the same forces who brought her down will come for Donald Trump if he wins the election.

“There is a huge resistance to pro-growth supply side policies that will deliver economic dynamism and help reduce debt.

“What the International institutions and the economic establishment want to see is higher taxes, higher spending, more big government and more regulation. They do not want to see that challenged.”

Ms Truss also called for the UK to copy the United States government in one major respect, and allow the Prime Minister to appoint senior civil servants to the top of government departments.

In the UK, the PM can only appoint around 100 ‘Special Advisors’ to assist Secretaries of State push their agenda through the Whitehall machine.

In stark contrast, the US allows the President to appoint 3000 people to government positions.

She argued that there should be more political appointees to senior roles in the political bureaucracy, as well as shut down unaccountable Quangos.

Turning fire on the “global administrative state”, she similarly took aim at institutions such as the UN, the WHO and COP.

Ms Truss argued that the best people to make decisions are those who are democratically elected, not “people sitting on international bodies who are divorced from the concerns of the public”.
