A Latvian has been charged over the alleged hit-and-run death of a 12 year-old boy two years ago - after he was finally extradited to the UK. Schoolboy Keaton Slater died after being hit by a black BMW in Coventry on 14 June 2024 while on his way home from lessons just before the start of summer holidays.
Efforts to extradite suspect Dolars Aleksanders, 23, from his native Latvia began after West Midlands Police named him as a person of interest shortly after the crash. On Wednesday night police said he was finally taken into custody at Gatwick Airport and will appear later today before Birmingham Magistrates Court.

Ben Samples, of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), said: "We have decided to charge Dolars Aleksanders with one count of causing death by dangerous driving following a police investigation into a fatal road traffic collision that led to the death of Keaton Slater.
"Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to court to pursue criminal proceedings.
“CPS West Midlands has worked closely with West Midlands Police, Home Office, the Latvian authorities, Europol, the Joint International Crime Centre (JICC), CPS International, and our Extradition Unit to bring Mr Aleksanders back to face proceedings in a UK court for an alleged crime that took place here.”
Efforts to extradite Aleksanders had been under way since police named him as a person of interest shortly after the crash.
Parents Clint and Louise Slater said before the extradition that Keaton was "just walking home that day, doing nothing wrong."
In tribute his older brother Josh added: "Two years on and still does not feel real. You touched the hearts of thousands and thousands of people, Keats. We will always keep your memory alive.
"I wish you had the chance to grow up and had the chance to live your life. It just breaks my heart."
Aleksanders was flown into Gatwick Airport on Wednesday and was then transported to a custody block in the West Midlands, police said.

West Midlands Police said on Wednesday evening: "A man has tonight (5 August) been charged over the death of 12-year-old Keaton Slater in Coventry after he was extradited from Latvia.
"Dolars Aleksanders was detained last month and we've since worked with other agencies, including the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and National Crime Agency (NCA), to bring him back to the UK.
"The 23-year-old was flown into Gatwick Airport earlier today and was then transported to a custody block in the West Midlands.
"Aleksanders has now been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following the fatal hit-and-run collision in Radford Road in June 2024.
"He has been remanded to appear before Birmingham Magistrates Court tomorrow (6 August).
"Keaton's parents continue to be supported by specially trained officers. They have been fully updated around these developments and we thank them for their patience and support during our investigation."
