Heartbreaking video shows terrified Cavalry horses covered in blood running through London

Terrified horses escaped from the Household Cavalry have been seen running through the streets of London.

Videos taken by eyewitnesses show up to five horses running along the capital’s roads without riders. One of them, a white horse, appears to be covered in blood, with a red liquid spread across much of its chest and legs.

They escaped after becoming spooked on Buckingham Palace Road. Commuters heard a soldier scream in pain when he fell from his horse after it ran into a car.

This happened during a routine exercise on Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall earlier this morning. The road has been shut by police.

Bashir Aden, 48, a construction worker, told The Telegraph: “I saw a soldier falling down into the street after the horse ran into a car. One of my colleagues called the police.

“The man hit the floor hard, he was screaming in pain. You could see blood all over the parked car.”

One video shows a single black horse in Buckingham Gate. The poster said they saw all three horses, all covered in blood, in the area at 8.25am.

One of the horses was caught by bystanders near Victoria train station after it ran into a bus and smashed its windscreen.

Daniel Hewitt, the investigations editor at ITV News posted a video at 8.37am of just two horses running down Aldwych, 1.5 miles away. They were also seen at Tower Bridge.

The remaining horses were calmed and contained by police near Limehouse. Officers are waiting for Army horseboxes to take the animals back.

The City of London Police said: “At around 8.40am, we were called about horses that had became loose and were travelling through the city. Our officers have contained two horses on the Highway near Limehouse. We're waiting for an Army horse box to collect the horses and transport them to veterinary care.”

Since the police's statement earlier this morning, an Army Spokesperson said:“A number of military working horses become loose during routine exercise this morning.

"All of the horses have now been recovered and returned to camp. A number of personnel and horses have been injured and are receiving the appropriate medical attention.”
