The driver of a vehicle involved in the accident that killed two First Nations elders and injured two other individuals Sept. 30 at the Tsawwassen Mills Mall in B.C.’s Lower Mainland has been released from hospital, according to police.

Police say the Sept. 30 crash resulted in two individuals being pronounced dead at the scene and saw two others airlifted to hospital where they remain in critical condition as of Oct. 1.

Authorities said there is no evidence the collision was intentional and investigators are looking into whether the driver had a medical emergency that may have contributed to the accident.

The collision took place in an area of the mall that was scheduled to unveil four traditional carvings called house posts after a walk commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation held by the Tsawwassen First Nation.

Police say the incident was not connected to the planned event or walk.

Police said investigators from the Delta Police Traffic Collision Team have taken statements from witnesses and looked at surveillance and other video footage, as well as examined other information from the incident.

Video from the scene showed a pickup truck with the logo of Alpine Building Maintenance involved in the collision, with the company confirming Oct. 1 that one of its vehicles had been involved in the collision.

“We are co-operating with the appropriate authorities to support their investigation. Our thoughts are with everyone affected,” it said in an Oct. 1 statement to media.
