Several properties have been evacuated in Chelmsford after police found a number of items "which require specialist focus". Essex Police said in the early hours of Tuesday they had arrested two people as part of an ongoing investigation.
The statement read: "We executed a warrant at a property in Meadgate Avenue, Chelmsford, earlier this evening (Tuesday 9 June). Ahead of that warrant, a 34-year-old man, from Chelmsford, was arrested on suspicion of an offence under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883. A 33-year-old woman, from Ongar, was also arrested. Both remain in custody.
"As a result of searches at the Meadgate Avenue address, we have now identified items which require specialist focus and a number of properties in the area have been evacuated, with a 100-metre cordon put in place as a precaution. This is to ensure the safety of the community and to allow specialists the time and space to work."

Homes evacuated after suspicious items found
Essex Police say a number of properties have been evacuated after officers discovered items requiring specialist attention during searches at the Meadgate Avenue address.
A 100-metre cordon has been put in place as a precaution while specialist teams carry out their work.
The force said:
"As a result of searches at the Meadgate Avenue address, we have now identified items which require specialist focus and a number of properties in the area have been evacuated, with a 100-metre cordon put in place as a precaution."
Two arrested as police launch investigation
Two people have been arrested as part of an ongoing Essex Police investigation in Chelmsford.
Officers executed a warrant at a property in Meadgate Avenue on Tuesday evening.
Ahead of the warrant, a 34-year-old man from Chelmsford was arrested on suspicion of an offence under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883.
A 33-year-old woman from Ongar was also arrested.
Both remain in custody.
