Amazon has been forced to stop selling an electric blanket after it was found to pose a "high risk" of setting beds on fire.

UK shoppers have been issued an urgent warning over heated blankets sold on Amazon after the products were judged to fall short of safety regulations. The e-commerce giant had to withdraw the L'Agraty Electric Blanket from online purchase after the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) concluded that it posed a "high risk of fire". The OPSS said the dimensions of the blanket's plug meant it cannot make a secure connection with the socket, increasing the risk of the appliance sparking, overheating and catching alight.

The product has been moved from the digital marketplace and was rejected at the UK border after falling short of the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 and the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994. The government confirmed that the blanket, which originated from China, did not meet legal requirements.

An official recall notice said: "This product presents a high risk of fire as the plug does not meet the dimensional requirements of BS 1363 and therefore cannot make a secure connection with the socket.

"This may result in the appliance sparking, overheating and catching fire. The product does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 and the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994."

An Amazon spokesperson added: "We require all products offered in our store to comply with applicable laws, regulations and Amazon policies.

"We develop innovative tools to prevent unsafe products from being listed. We continuously monitor our store, and if we discover a product was undetected by our automated checks, we address the issue immediately and refine our controls.

"We take action to maintain a safe selection for our customers, including removing noncompliant products, and outreach to sellers, manufacturers and government agencies for additional information, where appropriate.

"This product in question has been removed."
