Britain's 'biggest' one-day Christmas market returning to pretty little town

The UK’s “largest one-day" Christmas market is set to take place after last year’s event was cancelled due to bad weather. More than 120 stalls are expected to take part in the Beverley Festival of Christmas on December 14.

The festival in the quaint market town of Beverley, East Yorkshire, is in its 29th year and attracts thousands of visitors from across the country, according to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council which organises the event. Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, tourism and leisure at the council, said: "Beverley Festival of Christmas is the flagship tourism event for our region and is an important date in the calendar for businesses and traders.

"It is always a hugely popular event, with visitors from all over the UK coming to enjoy the festive stalls and entertainment.

“The event will also provide a welcome boost to the local visitor economy at such a wonderful time of the year.’’

The market is traditionally held annually on the second Sunday in December. 

The council says the historic centre of Beverley will be “transformed into a magical Christmas shopper’s wonderland” for the event which will kick off with a parade. 

Visitors will be able to buy seasonal gifts, as well as food, drinks and more at the market. 

The market will take place between 10am and 4pm and will be held across three areas of Beverley town centre.

A new addition for this year's event will be local businesses and traders showcasing their products in the North Bar's Georgian Quarter.

The weekly Saturday Market held the day before will also have a Christmas theme.

A free park and ride will be operating from Beverley Racecourse across the weekend. 

Last year’s Beverley Festival of Christmas was called off due to Storm Darragh after forecasts of heavy rain and strong winds. 

A council spokesperson said they were “devastated” to cancel the market, but that safety was “primary concern”.
