The best fish and chip shops in the UK have been officially named, and not all of them come from seaside towns, reviews have found. The country has long been the home of fish and chips - although it is suspected to have originally come from Spain and Portugal - a reputation that it has kept in 2024.

Data from the first quarter of the year compiled by YouGov has found that the dish is tied with roast chicken as the top among Britons, 86 percent of whom said it was their favourite.

Considering the ratings, it may come as no surprise that the UK has approximately 10,500 fish and chip shops scattered across numerous communities - both seaside and inland.

One company claims to have found the best-rated dozen of them all, considering reviews from multiple sources.

Recent data compiled by betting firm Betway has ranked the 12 best fish and chip shops in the UK.

The company considered reviews from customers on several platforms - including TripAdvisor, Google and Instagram - and ranked them with an individual index score.

The scores accounted for hashtags, views of each location expressed on Instagram, and their overall TripAdvisor rankings.

Betway compiled its final list by ranking the establishments with the lowest index ratings ranked the highest.

At the top was a city joint, Fish Lounge in Brixton Hill, London, which tied with East Coast, based on the coast of seaside city Edinburgh.

The remaining 10 fish and chip shops were found primarily in other cities, with London, Leeds and Edinburgh making other appearances on the list.

Surprisingly, Cornwall, a seaside county perhaps the most famous in the country for its fish, only appears once.
