
Belleville, Ont., police to provide update on shootout near synagogue
Police in Belleville, Ont., are set to speak to media at 2 p.m. Thursday to provide an update on the ongoing investigation into Sunday night's shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue.
- Belleville’s police chief is expected to tell reporters about what motivated Sunday’s shooting near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue at 2 p.m. ET.
- Ontario’s solicitor general, who oversees public safety in the province, is also expected in Belleville.
- Police have not spoken specifically about what brought the shooter Sean Ward to the area with a shotgun. Ward was fatally injured that night.

Belleville police Const. Jeff Smith was stationed outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue, located in a residential area of the city, when 29-year-old Sean Ward fired at him with a shotgun.
Smith returned fire. Another Belleville officer also fired their weapon.
Smith was critically injured, while Ward suffered life-threatening injuries and later died in hospital.
Belleville police to give update at 2 p.m. ET
Four days after a Belleville police officer was critically wounded near a local synagogue holding a Yom Kippur service, the police force is hosting a news conference Thursday at 2 p.m. ET.
Belleville police Chief Murray Rodd will be on hand to give remarks, joined by Ontario Solicitor General Michael Kerzner.
