The British Army has been drafted in after a number of suspicious items were found in Grimethorpe, Barnsley.

The Army has been called out to a UK market town after a number of "suspicious items" were discovered.

A giant 100m police cordon is in place in Brierley Road in Grimethorpe, Barnsley after police officers raided a house shortly after 7am on Wednesday morning. South Yorkshire Police were later forced to draft in the British Army to help due to the nature of the discovery.

The Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team and other mergency services remain at the scene. There are some road closures and public transport may also be disrupted and the public are urged to stay away.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: "Around 7.10am today (Wednesday 8 May) police executing a warrant on Brierley Road, Grimethorpe found a number of suspicious items.

"The army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been called and a 100m cordon is in place as a precaution while emergency services work together at the scene.

"There are some road closures and public transport may also be disrupted. We would advise members of the public to avoid the area. We would like to thank the public for their patience and their cooperation. We will update you again as soon as we have more information."
