A major retailer has confirmed that two ‘flagship’ stores will be closing this month. B&M is undergoing an overhaul of its business operations.

The first closure will be of the Carmarthen store on August 15. It will be moving to a new location on August 22, a former B&Q unit that’s one of the largest retail spaces in the town. The second will be the Sunderland store on August 16. It will be refurbished and reopened on August 22.

On its website, B&M apologised for any inconvenience, adding: "In order to complete the final phase, it will be necessary for a closure period."

The retailer further explained that the expansion works were designed to offer shoppers a "bigger and better B&M experience".

This comes after similar upgrades at B&M stores in Pentwyn, Stockport, and Leicester. The company also launched new branches in Norfolk, Hertfordshire, and Devon earlier this year. B&M is also opening a new mega-store inside a former Debenhams in Stirling, which is expected to open later this year.

The company recently announced that it is launching "modernised" tech across 790 stores, with new point-of-sale (POS) hardware and software deployed to improve operations for customers and colleagues.

Partnering with technology specialist PMC, the retailer's transformation programme will "improve operational agility, speed up transactions and enhance the customer experience". It comes as part of a seven-year-long relationship between the two businesses.

The overhaul will see B&M's till systems replaced with "a more reliable and standardised platform". The two firms have promised that this will result in increased uptime, improved functionality and reduced checkout friction, as reported by the Retail Gazette.

The roll-out of the new system initially began in January 2026 and is expected to be complete sometime this month. Once complete, it will be available across B&M's 790 stores across the UK.

B&M implementation services manager David Laithwaite said: “PMC have proven experience with delivering POS solutions. Their collaboration and seamless coordination with our other service providers and B&M staff have been exemplary.

“The synergy in communication and a joined-up working approach across the board has significantly enhanced our operational efficiency, enabling remarkable progress with this project.”
