Kulsuma Akter was stabbed to death as she shopped in Bradford with her baby on Saturday and international student Habibur Masum is accused of her murder.

A Bangladeshi student who launched a YouTube channel where he posted videos about travel, shopping and cooking, has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman who was stabbed to death as she pushed her baby in a pram.

Habibur Masum, 25, is accused of murdering Kulsuma Akter, 27, who was killed in the Westgate area of Bradford on Saturday.

West Yorkshire Police said the baby was unharmed.

Mr. Masum has also been charged with possession of a bladed article.

He was arrested 170 miles away in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire on Tuesday and appeared at Bradford magistrates’ court on Thursday.

Mr. Masum spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address in Burnley, Lancashire.

District Judge Alex Boyd told him: “You are charged with the offence of murder, which can only be deal with at the crown court and that offence is sent to Bradford Crown Court for your first hearing which will take place tomorrow. Between now and that date you are remanded in custody.”

Mr. Masum is expected to face trial at Leeds Crown Court later this year or possibly next year.

West Yorkshire Police said a 23-year-old man arrested in Chester on Monday on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on bail.

Four men, aged 23, 26, 28, and 29, from the West Midlands, are in custody on suspicion of assisting an offender and drug offences.

Police Watchdog has Been Called In

West Yorkshire Police has referred itself to the Independent Office of Police Conduct because officers had contact with Ms. Akter before her death.

Mr. Masum, who was from Bangladesh, came to Britain in 2021 to study for a master’s degree in digital marketing at the University of Bedfordshire.

He started a YouTube channel, which has 77 subscribers, on which he has posted videos on shopping, travel and cooking.

His most recent video was two weeks ago when he went on a trip from Manchester to Barcelona and provided a commentary in Bengali.

Shaun Sigamoney, district crown prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service in Yorkshire and Humberside, said: “Our thoughts are with Kulsuma Akter’s family at this time. We remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that they have a right to a fair trial.”

“It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings,” they added.
