England fans appear to be put off by an updated version of the new kit which features a "playfully" updated St George's Cross. The release of the England squad's home shirt ahead of the Euro 2024 in Germany caused a stir, with many politicians blasting Nike's decision.

The controversy over the England home shirt came after manufacturer Nike decided the Cross of St George would be embossed with more colours in a bid to update it. The traditional red cross was replaced with a multi-coloured cross, featuring two shades of blue and a shade of purple.

Proud England fans across the country, as well as politicians from both sides of the House were up in arms over the move. Sir Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak both condemned Nike’s decision to alter the traditional flag.

Now, new data shows the outrage has not abated, with supporters searching for the away shirt, which doesn’t feature an updated flag, far more than they are for the home shirt.

Google searches for “England away kit” have shot up by 336 percent in the last 30 days.

What’s more, fans are searching for the shirt 425 percent more than the home shirt, indicating that the ill-feeling towards the updated Cross of St George has persisted.

Simon Pretswell, CEO of UKSoccershop, commented on the findings: “Nike's recent decision to alter the colour of England's flag on the football kit for the Euros has sparked a wave of mixed reactions from fans.

“While some may view this change as a refreshing and modern take on tradition, others have heavily criticised it as a departure from the team's heritage and identity.

“Fans, players, and political figures have weighed in on the kit decision, and it's interesting to see such a massive spike in searches for the away kit this year due to it concealing the controversial cross compared to the home kit.”

Nigel Farage slammed the new home shirt, telling GB News in March: "It bears no relationship to the St George's Cross whatsoever.

"If the England football team think that's acceptable, well, why on earth would you be apologetic about Englishness if you're going to play for England in the European football finals? I think it's an absolute joke."

Meanwhile, Lee Anderson said: "The left have a nerve to ask me why I want my country back.

"This virtue signalling, namby-pamby, pearl-clutching woke nonsense must stop. Any more of this and I’ll be on the first flight to Rwanda."
