Police probing the theft of £700 worth of booze are looking for an ex-Premier League footballer lookalike.

Detectives probing the theft released a CCTV image of a bearded, grey-haired man they would like to speak to.

South Yorkshire Police said the man is described as a white man in his late 30s, of medium build, around 6ft tall and with short grey hair.

But internet jokers spotted a likeness to the former Manchester United star, who was famed for his nonchalant style and trademark look of wearing his collar up.

One social media wag quipped: "Eric Cantona has been on the rob."

A second asked: "What's Eric Cantona doing nicking booze?"

A third agreed: "Looks like Eric Cantona."

Police say the theft was reported in Sheffield on March 4 when £700 worth of alcohol was taken from a Morrison's supermarket in the city.

A spokesman said: "Police would like to speak to the man shown in the CCTV image as he may be able to help with enquiries.

He is described as a white man in his late 30s, of medium build, around 6ft tall and with short grey hair.

"If you can help, you can pass information to police online or by calling 101."

The striker, who signed for the Red Devils from rivals Leeds in 1992, scored 64 goals in 143 games for the club before announcing his shock retirement in 1997.

He then pursued a career in cinema and starred in the 2009 film Looking for Eric.
