Myanmar's military-ruled capital attacked by drones

The opposition in Myanmar says it ordered a mass drone attack on the country's embattled military in the capital Nay Pyi Taw.

The National Unity Government (NUG) said 29 drones armed with explosives targeted the airport, air force base and military headquarters.

The military has told BBC Burmese they shot down seven drones, with one exploding on the airport runway.

The NUG represents the elected government that was toppled in a coup.

The military has been fighting rebel insurgents since it seized power in 2021.

The resulting civil war has killed thousands and displaced around 2.6 million people according to the UN.

But in recent months, it has been facing increasingly effective opposition to its rule and lost large areas of the country to armed resistance groups.

"The synchronised drone operations were simultaneously executed against Nay Pyi Taw targeting both the military headquarters… and Alar air base," the exiled National Unity Government (NUG) said.

The NUG's deputy secretary Mg Mg Swe told BBC Burmese that they had planned and strategised with several defence groups to conduct this operation.
