‘He must own this!' Suella Braverman slams Rishi Sunak but says a new leader won’t win

Suella Braverman has said that Rishi Sunak’s plan is clearly not working and warned he must start delivering on voters’ real priorities if he wants to avoid a devastating wipe-out.

Speaking after a dire two days of local election results, Ms Braverman said it is now too late to change leader, but the party must rapidly change course if it wants to survive.

She warned Tory MPs and government ministers are "demoralised and incredibly concerned", and warned the Tories will be lucky to have any MPs at the next election.

Ms Braverman said that Conservative voters are “on strike” and refusing to back the party because Mr Sunak is failing to show he cares about their priorities.

She told Laura Kuenssberg: “There is no disguising the fact that these have been terrible election results for the Conservatives, and they suggest we are heading to a Labour government and that fills me with horror”.

Asked why she is not supporting a change of leader given the looming Tory wipeout, the former Home Secretary explained that ditching Mr Sunak is no longer “a feasible prospect right now”.

“We don’t have enough time, and it’s impossible for anyone new to come and change our fortunes.

“There’s no Superman or Superwoman out there who can do it. Rishi Sunak has been leading us for 18 months - he’s been making these decisions. These are the consequences of those decisions.

“He needs to own this and therefore he needs to fix it.”

Asked what the Tories must now do differently between now and the election, Ms Braverman highlighted key areas such as properly cutting taxes rather than “tweaking around the edges” as the last two budgets have done.

She also demanded Mr Sunak put a cap on legal migration and take Britain out of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Ms Braverman slammed the Government’s recent legislative priorities, accusing Mr Sunak of being wildly out of touch with the public.

She ranted: “They’re putting forward legislation to ban smoking and to clamp down on pedicabs!”

“We voted more on pedicabs and on banning smoking than we’ve voted on meaningful health care reform, or fixing social care, or improving mental health care!

“We are not delivering for the people, we’re not delivering the politics that people want.”

She also slammed the Government for finding itself trailing so far behind Labour in the polls, saying it’s a disgrace to be so far behind Keir Starmer, “who has the charisma of a peanut and who is overseeing a party which is a rabble of hard-left maniacs who would undo Brexit, who would open our borders and who would indoctrinate our institutions and our schools with politically correct ideology”.

Asked about various Tory MPs who say the problem for Mr Sunak hasn’t been policy but disunity and constant criticism from the likes of Ms Braverman, the top Tory leadership contender hit back and said there’s “no point in blaming those of us who are telling the truth for the problems we’re facing”.

“I’m not in charge, I’m not in government. These decisions on policy and communication and campaigns are being made by Rishi Sunak.”
