Spring is here and we are glad it has come sooner rather than later. Fingers crossed it starts to bring some better weather now.

While some of us will be keen to get out into our gardens, some people will be questioning when it is a good time to prune certain flowers - in particular roses.

It seems as if pruning roses is a time-critical gardening job as trimming them at the right time can bring you good growth and great blooming.

However, if you cut them at the wrong time then it can not only damage the plant but also lead to a poor bloom display.

But one professional gardener told Homes & Gardens all there is to know about pruning roses.

When is the cut-off point to shrub prune roses?

While it remains important to gardeners to know when is the best time it all depends on the location and the type of rose that you've planted.

For shrub roses late winter or early spring is the perfect time to prune them. Of course, yet again it does depend on where you live and the species of rose.

So this will vary from gardener to gardener and it could happen anytime from February to early April.

The expert recommends after the last frost but just as the new rose buds are beginning to swell.

Of course, we can't predict the weather, especially in the UK but if you look at the rose stems it will help give guidance.

Some gardeners may feel it is too late but pruning in early April is often the best time.

While pruning promotes growth in the plant it is good news so long as the frost has passed.

When is the best time to prune climbing roses?

It seems like the perfect time is from late autumn to mid-winter the complete opposite to shrub roses.

While there are many times of varieties of roses, pruning climbing roses at this time will help you find out which stems are doing well. This can help you identify which other ones should be trimmed back or pruned.

During early spring the only thing you have to do with climbing roses is remove any dead wood.
