An emergency shelter at the top of Ben Nevis is been turned into a “dumping ground” by selfish tourists.

Furious walkers have slammed those who have decided to use a refuge at the top of Scotland’s highest mountain as a place to lob rubbish.

The shelter is used by Lochaber Mountain Rescue to treat casualties as well as offering climbers a safe haven if they’re caught in bad weather.

But instead, a new clip shows what should be a little sanctuary filled with litter, black bags as well as being scrawled with graffiti.

Walker Iain Cameron took to social media platform X to share his dismay as well as the grim footage.

I despair. The Ben Nevis summit shelter is, as the name suggests, a refuge for people who may require it in an emergency. Instead it’s been used as a dumping ground for selfish people who can’t be bothered to take their sh!t home.

Around 1.2m people have now seen the footage and have piled in with their disgust at the situation.

One said: “Bloody hell. Who would actually do that?”

Another said: “Imagine if you were in a real emergency situation and had to take shelter in that muck to recoup.

“I dunno what's with the mentality of some folk who head up and use the places as doss houses.”

“How utterly depressing,” added another.

However it seems as though those looking out for the area have now taken the situation into their own hands and have been cleaning up the shelter as well as appealing for help to keep it clean.

One said: “There was a guy on Facebook the other day who posted videos of the state of the shelter.. he had been up 3/4 days in a row solo to clear it out... he was trying to recruit help.”

Lochaber Mountain Rescue has previously said the shelter - which sits on top of the old observatory tower - had become unusable, reports The Herald.

Mike Smith, treasurer, said it was a “complete and utter no no” to take a casualty to the shelter.

He added: “It’s good to have a sheltered area to do these things."
