Child among at least five dead on Channel migrant boat

A child is among at least five people who have died while trying to cross the English Channel in the early hours of Tuesday, French media said.

The French coast guard said the victims were attempting to get to the UK on an overloaded boat which was carrying 110 people.

According to the authorities, the boat initially ran aground on a sandbank before taking to the sea again.

Several search-and-rescue-operations are under way.
